Autobiography
The 16 Mennonite writers of this book were Depression-era babies who amid experiencing World War II, the Korean, Vietnam, and the Cold wars, helped Eastern Mennonite College (now University) and North American Mennonites develop more global perspectives and commitments.

As their frame of reference shifted from the rural to the professional, many of these writers assumed key roles in leading and shaping Mennonite institutions. For all of them, serviceÑto church, community, worldÑwas an imperative. In their time of social change, Anabaptism offered these sixteen individuals an explanation of what they believed and how to live.

These remarkable accounts reflect the experiences and stories similar to those of hundreds of Mennonites whose lives were changed during this disruptive era. By confronting their own beliefs and faith practices, they gradually transformed the Mennonite church. No more could Mennonites be "the quiet in the land.

Authors include Esther K. Augsburger, Myron S. Augsburger, Titus W. Bender, James R. Bomberger, Gerald R. Brunk, Ray Gingerich, Samuel L. Horst, Albert N. Keim, C. Norman Kraus, Nancy V. Lee, Harold D. Lehman, John R. Martin, Paul Peachey, Calvin W. Redekop, Calvin E. Shenk.

Note that this Cascadia edition of Making Sense of the Journey is nearly the same as the edition released earlier by Anabaptist Center for Society & Religion. ACRS and Cascadia are offering this Cascadia edition to enhance the significant distribution and promotional efforts ACRS is already making on behalf of its publications.

Peace
Entering a field of ongoing controversy, this book dares to offer a new model or vision--defenseless Christianity--for understanding Anabaptism, both present and past. An Anabaptism defined as defenseless Christianity should be seen as a nonviolent Christian movement with a world-reconciling theology despite the fact that some first-generation Anabaptists were not pacifists.

IN answer to recent challenges, the authors contend that Anabaptism as it developed and survived is properly understood as a nonviolent movement. At the same time, the authors acknowledge that there were multiple forms of Anabaptism in the sixteenth-centure, requiring ongoing discussion within the movement abut the meaning and purpose of the church.

Since a prime characteristic of Anabaptism is the call to shape Christian practices within the story and life of Jesus Christ, the authors describe Anabaptism in a way that speaks to every Christian, whether or not they belong to one of the historic peace churches. The authors believe that the defenseless Christianity of historic Anabaptism has much to offer contemporary peach churches as well as the christian church as a whole.

History
Pilgrim Marpeck (ca. 1495-1556) was a dedicated Anabaptist leader who was also a talented civil engineer. Markpeck possessed a keen intelligence and a passion for spiritual and biblical theology. He was one of the most original and eclectic Anabaptist thinkers. On larger projects he wrote collaboratively, with a circle of like-minded Anabaptists. Consequently, authorship of some writings has to be ascribed not only to Markpeck, but to the "Markpeck Circle." Shortly after 1600, however, his writings and his "circle" seemingly disappeared. No distinct Marpeckite Anabaptist community survived the 17th century.

This volume of writings by Pilgram Marpeck and his Circle is the first of a planned set of three. All making available previously untranslated writings. Copyright 1999.

Confession Of Faith
This volume seeks to bring together for the first time a representative collection of confessions produced by Anabaptist groups from 1527 to 1660. It attends to the earliest phase of Anabaptist and Mennonite confessional writing in Europe, laying bare the foundations that set the stage for later confessional developments. It also includes introductions to each of the confessions, bringing into view the specific contest out of which each doctrinal statement emerged. A volume in the Classics of the Radical Reformation series.

Menno Simons
Those who have an interest in Anabaptist and Mennonite history and theology, and who have facility in Dutch, have long referred to the biography of Dirk Philips written by Jacobus ten Doornkaat Koolman, published in the Netherlands some years ago. Ten Doornkaat Koolman's classic is now available for the first time in English.

Dirk Philips was one of the most important early leaders and bishops of the Dutch Anabaptists, later called Mennonites. Although he usually worked in Menno's shadow, in his later years he emerged as an important leader in his own right, and author of many important and systematic theological treatises.

Religions
A classic description of the Anabaptist movement. Walter Klalssen shows how Anabaptists combined elements of Protestantism and Catholicism into a third option that, he argues, has continuing relevance for the present. This is especially true in the areas of lay witness, peace and war, economics, and relationships with the state. Klaassen's hope that increasing numbers of Protestants and Catholics would enter into dialogue with the Anabaptist tradition has in fact been realized. Today Anabaptism is accepted as part of the common heritage of all Christians.

The unabridged version of Anabaptist History and Theology, published in 1995, received high praise from reviewers. One called the book "a masterful survey," while another concluded that the book "tells the Anabaptist story with impressive synthetic power."

Anabaptist History and Theology: Revised Student Edition follows the same narrative format and story line as the unabridged book. But the text has been completely rewritten and redesigned to meet the needs of the non-specialist reader. This second, revised edition features larger print and numerous sidebars and text boxes.
