| What is an appropriate response for Christians committed to nonviolence, when the country
in which they are living goes to war? This book provides one historical answer to the question.
Mennonite immigrants had been promised military exemptions when they settled in Russia in the
eighteenth century, but the nineteenth century brought changed circumstances, and called for a
new response. By the time of the outbreak of World War I, Mennonites in Russia had negotiated
alternatives to combatant military service in the form of work in forestry camps and the medical
corps. This book tells the story of Mennonite Alternative Service in Russia by means of an
historical introduction (Lawrence Klippenstein), diaries and memoirs (Jacob Dick, accessing his
father's story), and a rich collection of photographs. The immediacy of the diary accounts and the
graphic directness of the photographs preserve an important chapter of Mennonite history in
Russia. At the same time, the response of the church in that time and place poses questions that
continue to appear in the life of the Mennonite church world-wide. Copyright 2002. | |
