In a fast-paced world full of distractions, spiritual practice can help us become more centered--more in touch with ourselves and others, more in touch with the world around us, more in touch with God. Sacred Pauses is an introduction to this more centered way of life.

The author, a pastor in British Columbia, begins with her own longing for personal renewal. What would it take to feel renewed every day? instead of waiting for a vacation to smooth out the tensions of life, instead of waiting until the end of the week to shed our weariness, what if we could take time out every day? Live a renewed life every day? Be refreshed by God every day?

Sacred Pauses offers simple ways for readers to do just that. Each chapter explores a different spiritual practice--from classic disciplines of Scripture reading and prayer to other creative approaches such as paying attention, making music, and having fun. With plenty of stories from real life and ideas to try, this book is personal and practical. It's flexible format is appropriate for personal use or in a group, every day or any time.

Whenever renewal occurs, everyone in the church is drawn into involvement in the church's mission. But within a generation or two, vitality wanes and ministry is left to religious specialists. In The Power of All, renewal leaders Stuart and Sian Murray Williams confront this thought-provoking dilemma by asking: How can a New Testament model help empower and renew the church in today's post-Christian society?

Follow the authors as they outline how early churches were multivoiced, valued the gifts of all, and expected that the Holy Spirit would speak through all members of the community. Discover the growth and opportunities that occur when we nurture the wider community's spiritual talents.

When it comes to mail spirituality, men seem to have only two choices for models--to be strong, take charge and independent, like warriors, or silent an along, like monks. That, says Gareth Brandt, is far too limiting.

"When I started examining the subject, I thought there must be other images we could use to help us define what a Christian man looks like," he says. "I was sure that not every man wants to go into battle, or withdraw from others."

Brandt, who teaches spirituality at Columbia Bible College in Abbotsford, B.C., decided to test his idea by inviting some male friends to participate in a discussion group exploring different images of male spirituality. He sent each chapter out in advance to the group, which then met to talk about it.

The result of those meetings is Under Construction, which uses the story of Joseph in the book of Genesis to explore other images of male spirituality-images such as peacebuilder, forgiver, reconciler and creator of God's shalom.

For Brandt, male spirituality "reaches its height when it shows compassion to all people, beginning with those close to us. It's about being part of building God's commonwealth of love and justice, having the courage to face the wounds of our past and building a marriage, a family, and a career while empowering others to build with us."

Under Construction: Reframing Men's Spirituality was made possible through the generious support of Mennonite Men, an organization of the Mennonite Church that promotes and develops resources for men.

Reading the Bible After ChristendomView

Lloyd Pietersen argues that for too long the Old Testament has been the primary source for Christian ethics and the letters of Paul for Christian discipleship. Without disparaging these sources, the author suggests that the church in a postmodern, post-Christian society needs to look at Scripture with a different focus.

This book seeks to examine what reading the Bible might look like in the current period when the church is no longer central and the Christian story is not well known. Pietersen argues that, after Christendom, Jesus should be central to any Christian biblical interpretation.

Evangelism
In a time when many are questioning the relevance of the church to their spiritual journeys, this book makes a bold case that "going to church" is intrinsic to Christian faith. Drawing on Anabaptist life and conviction, Mast presents Christ's call to all believers to be the church, whether gathered for worship or scattered for service.

By exploring such practices as baptism, communion, singing, and group discernment, he asks us to consider how participation in the life of the church shapes our daily witness- how "going to church" transforms "going to work" in the world that God loves.

Aging
Does retirement mean sitting in a rocker and waiting for death? Or desperately using cosmetics, plastic surgery, and youthful clothing styles in an effort to stay young?

Katie Funk Wiebe says a resounding no to both attitudes. In this book, destined to become a classic, she talks about the inner journey of aging. Wiebe speaks honestly, faithfully, and movingly about the transition to retirement and how it compares with life's earlier "border crossings."

Anyone struggling through the pain and promise of a new stage in life will find a kindred spirit.

Now this second edition provides a new foreword and preface, revised original chapters, and two new and poignant ones telling of Wiebe's journey through the death of her daughter and of recent reflections on and experiences of being "old."

Revised 2003.

A Mennonite Woman, part narrative, part theology, part spiritual memoir, Dawn Ruth Nelson asks us to wake up to what is shaping us spiritually as contemporary Christians in North American culture. Discover why Mennonites have been drinking deeply from contemplative spiritual formation wells in the last 30 years. Experience the story of twentieth-century Mennonite agrarian spirituality through the lens of one womanÕs life and one seminary.

A Mennonite Woman explores how the shapes people live among in turn shape them. Mennonite Christians are called to be intentional about giving a God-shape to their lives. This book argues that spiritual formation is necessarily changing from a spiritual-formation-by-just-living-in-community to a more intentional spiritual formation-by-contemplative-and communal-disciplines.

But more than that, here is simply a good story! Here the author integrates her Mennonite background, her encounter with Irish Catholic faith, and the spiritual life she discovers in her grandmother and in her own everyday life.
