History
When the Western District of the General Conference Mennonite Church planned its Centennial Celebration in 1992, the members decided to commemorate their heritage through telling stories about people who helped to shape their history. Twenty of those "Stories of Remembrance" have been collected in this book.

These stories will be most appropriate for members of the denomination whose history they tell. But others interested in the role of individuals in the formation of a denominational history will want to know about the book also. It will be useful, as well, for examples of ways in which individuals can make a difference wherever they are.

Bela Banerjee: Bringing Health to India's villages
paperback, 178 pages, $11.95
We often hear of the virtues of a life of service, yet rarely does one encounter someone who gave of themselves totally, a person for whom service to others was the meaning of living. Bela Banerjee was one such person. She spent a lifetime working in health care in Indian villages, always giving of her small earnings to family members and other loved ones. She rose from a disadvantaged background without resentment, and worked relentlessly for better health standards for India's poor.

Bela Banerjee: Bringing Health to India's Villages tells the story of this remarkable woman's life. It is amply illustrated with photographs from several sources, and includes a map of India noting in boldface type the places where Bela had lived and worked. The book is divided into eight parts, each beginning with a poem by Indian poet Rabindranath Tagore, whose message Bela found inspiring.

Bela became ill during her North American trip in 1992, and died on January 1, 1993, at the home of friends in Kansas. During her illness, Bela still yearned to serve others. Some of her last words were, "I want to work." Nurses and others who helped Bela during that time were deeply touched by her vision and caring personality.

In Memory of Bela Banerjee: A Coda to Her Biography
paperback, 40 pages, $2.95
A companion book to Bela Banerjee's biography, this new book covers Banerjee's last year of life when she traveled from India to Canada and the United States in 1992 to receive medical treatment and to visit North American friends. A particular focus is on her final four months when she was visiting in the home of her biographer in Kansas where she died on January 1, 1993.

The coda also draws together some of the linkages among the many people who came to know and care for Bela Banerjee in her last days with others from many parts of the world whose lives had already been linked with hers. It suggests a sense of the continuing influence of Bela Banerjee's life through memorials that have been established in her honor and through the lives of those who have been inspired by her presence.

Kinientos: New Pictures of an Old world is a book for those who want to broaden their perspective on the Columbian Legacy in the New World. Voices of pain, anger, fear, and hope resound from the poems, essays, and illustrations by 19 contributors of varied ethnic backgrounds--Native Peoples, African-American, Latina/o, Euro-American, and Asian-American. Some of you might not normally hear these voices, but you will find your world view enlarged if you take time to listen to them speak.

While speaking on issues that tend to separate people, this book also portrays interrelatedness through the use of the coined work Kinientos in the title, replacing the English work for kin (persons of common ancestry) for the Spanish quin in quinientos (500).

Much of the work to compile the anthology was done by a committee of the writers and visual artists themselves, making it a group work of art as well as a collection of individual pieces.

History
This Do in Remembrance of Me was commissioned by the Eden Mennonite Church of Moundridge, Kansas as part of their centennial celebration in 1995. However, the story of the Eden church related here actually began in 1874 when nearly every member of the Stucky Gemeinde, a congregation from Kotosufka village in southwestern Russia, immigrated to the United States and settled in McPherson County, Kansas. In Kansas, the congregation was charged as the Hoffnungsfeld Church. The Eden Church grew out of a split in the congregation some twenty years later.

Carefully researched through the use of archival materials and other church records, the author also gained insight through many oral interviews. The book contains a photographic history of the Eden Church with a selection of more than 20 photographs and illustrations.

Women
Fabric and Patterns by Esther Deckert Sayler will enrich you with its profiles of the women of Bergthal Church in Pawnee Rock, Kansas. The history of this small rural western Kansas church began with Mennonite immigration from Russia to the North American plains in 1874. The stories are based on interviews Sayler held with nearly all the women of the church. The book also includes historical anecdotes about the wife of the leader of the colony who settled the area, and from whom many of the present members are descended.

The photographs and the stories of joy, struggle, hope, and compassion in Fabric and Patterns remind us of the character-building quality that faith and hard work can provide in our lives. This book will be useful to persons in Women's Studies Programs and others interested in the lives of individual rural church women and the interactions among them.

The book is amply illustrated with photographs by the author and by her brother, Warren Deckert.
